Canal + the French television company has recently acquired ROK Studios from online movie platform Iroko TV! Rok Studios was created and run by Mary Remmy Njoku the wife of Iroko TV owner Jason Njoku and their chief mandate was to create original content for the platform.
With this new development, Mary will be given more production resources and stay on as Director General, still supervising the production content for the platform. “We are acquiring the talent of Mary,” Canal+ Chief Content Officer Fabrice Faux told TechCrunch on a call. “We will provide administrative support, finance, and equipment, but otherwise it is our intention to give Mary maximum autonomy and creative freedom,” he said.
I usually have reservations when foreign organisations try to acquire what I feel is ‘ours’ in this case Nollywood, as I do not want our stories and our voice to be watered down, compromised or replaced but I do see the positive side and that is our stories, if left intact .being able to ‘cross over’ and travel to the French West African side.
Already plenty of congratulatory messages have been coming from actors, actresses, directors and producers … many of which were given opportunities to hone their craft on the Rok Studios/Iroko TV platform.
Massive congrats to Mary and all involved in this new venture.
