Just as we were nestling down to enjoy the entertaining and hilarious film ‘Sugar Rush’ produced by Jadesola Osiberu (which in two weeks has already made over 100 million naira) comes the incredibly crushing news that it has just been banned by Nigerian Film & Video Censor’s Board (NFVCB) !
In a cryptic message that didn’t really explain why, the obviously distraught producer explained that the film had been ‘suspended’ from playing in the cinemas and that efforts were being made to bring it back quickly to screens.

On hearing this, we did some digging and discovered that the film was actually yanked off on the orders of NFVCB ( the regulatory body of motion picture films) for (according to them) failing to have a final approval from the Board before screening.
In a statement signed by the Director General Alhaji Adedayo Thomas and posted on their NFVCB Facebook Page he said and we quote, ‘ I however take responsibility for the gap in communication and the delay in granting final approval as the temporary approval given for the movie exhibition expired before we could release an official statement due to my preoccupation with extant responsibilities and backlog of movies requiring approval as a result of the December rush.
Others however are speculating that another Government body EFCC took offence to a scene in the movie and asked the producers to edit it out. Whether that’s true and they will, remains to be seen.
Meanwhile several members of the public have been making their displeasure known by taking to social media to condemn the act, even going as far as setting up trending hashtag #BringSugarRushMovieBack
We truly hope the issues can be resolved to bring the movie back in cinemas in Nigeria.
